Giuseppe Antonio Borgese
born in Polizzi Generosa in
1882, left the town as a
teenager to settle in Palermo
for a few years, before moving
on to Rome, Turin and Florence.
He chose America as his second
home when rebuffed by the
fascist regime.
Yet Polizzi Generosa always
remained anchored in his heart,
the object of elevated eulogies
and wrenching nostalgia. In Rubč,
his most important novel,
Polizzi and its endless horizons
are constantly present; from
sunsets dusting gold on the
mountain crests to its rivers
murmuring love calls. His
faithful wife Elisabeth Mann
Borgese, daughter of Thomas
Mann, always stood by his side.
Prof. Carini, grandfather of
Adele Adelfio Gagliardo, owner
of Palazzo Gagliardo maintained
a long and affectionate
correspondence with Giuseppe
Antonio Borgese when the latter
was in the US. The nostalgia for
his home town permeates his
thoughts. |
